Burning is limited on Mayne Island... and throughout British Columbia, for that matter.
It depends on a bunch of factors, including the time of the year, the risk of wildfire and the venting index.
This photo was taken in later winter when neighbours were burning leaves and branches. I'm pretty sure the venting index that day was poor and burning wasn't permitted, but if neighbours don't complain, and the fire is kept relatively small, some residents will burn stuff.
People can use the government's interactive map to check the venting index in their area before burning, and abide by the recommendation - it's the neighbourly thing to do.
