Soft launch with our first guests

Updated: Oct 16

With construction nearly completed, we welcomed our first guests at the Grove. In fact, we've hosted a few groups of family and friends over the last 2 months.

My friends Peter and Craig both biked to Mayne Island from Victoria on separate occasions. Both were very helpful with some of the finishing work. Visiting Mayne Island by bicycle seemed easy for them and lends credence to Dana's idea that we should target cyclists as a niche market for our B&B.

We then welcomed Dana's sister Denise, her partner Rob, her brother Darin, his partner Sal, our nephew Devlin, plus her mother Sharon. Darin was happy to plug in his electric vehicle to top up the battery.

Interestingly, Rob and Denise sailed down from Gabriola and anchored in Gallagher Bay. We never imagined visitors could come by boat, but clearly they can by anchoring at Gallagher Bay, or mooring at the government dock at Horton Bay. Important note: there is a major underwater communication cable at Gallagher Bay, so boaters are advised to be extremely careful when dropping and bringing up anchors.

Next up, my parents visited from Québec City, along with my brother Carl and his partner Elaine, who came from Mexico. It was a really big deal for my parents to make the trip to Victoria and Mayne Island, and I'm very grateful they had a chance to see and experience the Grove.

Our most recent visitors were a group of five guys who've been friends for over 40 years. They came to the Grove from Victoria, Edmonton and Calgary to reconnect - a reunion that happens every 2-5 years, according to the group. They loved the peace and quiet the Grove offered as they reconnected around the wood stove, the fire table on the deck, to say nothing of their visit to Mayne Island's Brewing Company, Active Pass Lighthouse and St. John Point Regional Park.

Here are a few of the photos Ken F. shared with us:

"The Grove on Mayne Island is a beautiful, quiet and spacious home with all the amenities one could want. A huge deck with hot tub looks out over massive trees and the ocean in the distance. The island itself is quaint with great food stores, coffee shop & bakery, and an amazing microbrewery. Even the ferry ride is a wonderful journey with wildlife and stunning views. I highly recommend a visit to the Grove on Mayne Island."

We're grateful to all our friends and family that helped us fine-tune our offering and the reservation system. Soon we will go live and open our B&B to the public and we'll undoubtedly learn lots from our future guests too.

October 27 is the day we plan to launch the B&B reservation system on this website, so come back to check it out, and pay us a visit to discover what Mayne Island has to offer!

Oh, and don’t forget to ask about the “friends and family discount!”
